Scientific Journal

For This Week's Topics

Current Journal Topics

The purpose of your Scientific Journal will be to collect your thoughts every two weeks and review what you have learned in science class and the world around you. Occasionally topics will be given to encourage thought provoking responses that will prompt you to make observations about your environment and prompt you to use some problem solving techniques. Topic discussions will be generated by journal entries.

Scientific Journals are scheduled on a Friday every few weeks.

15-20 minutes will be used on a Friday every few weeks to write a Scientific Journal entry.

Please write legibly in PRINT or Cursive :0)

Create a FOLDABLE and put you Name, Date and Group at the top right hand corner.

You are encouraged to stay on task or risk forfeiting a portion of your Journal grade.

●Record AT LEAST 3 facts that you have learned from science class.

●Record AT LEAST 2 facts that you have learned from Current Science.

●Record AT LEAST 1 OBSERVATION that you have made about the world around you.

Example: Weather patterns, animal behavior, technology...

●You will need to respond to a Journal Topic on the "Here's What I Think" tab of your Foldable.

6-10 COMPLETE SENTENCES are required!

After a few weeks of writing your journal entry on a "foldable" select one or more to create a Formal Journal Entry. We will complete 2 Formal Journal Entries this year.

The Crazy Chemists!

          Hey Mz. Marcotte,

This week/quarter in science class I have learned three new things. I learned that Li is the symbol for Lithium. I also learned that an unstable element is radioactive and Pu is a byproduct of Uranium.

I learned from Current Science that  Mars is the closet planet to earth right now and it can be seen in the western sky and that a South African Lady had her nose bitten off by a seal she was trying to help back into the water.

My observation from this week/quarter is that it has been unusually warm for January and we have been getting rain instead of snow or sleet like last year. (Use one or MORE of your 5 senses!)

"Here's what I think" TOPIC #1 *Writing your thoughts about 1 topic earns you a 82/C+

6-10 sentences are required for your paragraph

I think that it is important to predict future weather conditions so that we will know what we can expect in the future. I always watch the news and I like seeing what the weather will be. I like to know what the weather is because I play a lot of outdoor sports and I need to know what I need to wear for it. I also like to ski and when I go to the mountains, I need to plan what extra clothing I need to bring in case it gets cold. I used to want to be a weather person, but not anymore because I am not good with computers and I want to be a vet now.

"Here's what I think" TOPIC #2 *Writing your thoughts about 2 topics earns you a 90/B+

6-10 sentences are required for your paragraph

Some gradual processes in nature are the growth of people. I always check my height in Mrs. Smith's room, but I NEVER can see that I am growing. You can't see the growth of plants very easily, but they say that you can hear it in the rain forest. I saw that on Discovery once and I thought it was really cool, but I really don't believe it. Another thing that you can not see is the growth of mountains. Last year we learned in geography that some mountains gain in height, but we can not see that either. We would have to take pictures and then take measurements to see that a mountain got taller.

"Here's what I think" TOPIC #3 *Writing your thoughts about topics earns you an 105/A+

6-10 sentences are required for your paragraph

If the president asked  me to be the leader of a new anti-pollution campaign, I would stress that all cars need to be electric so that we do not put pollution in the air. I would also stress that we need to save our trees and stop cutting them down to make roads across the rain forest. I LOVE the rain forest and I think that if we are not careful we might kill all kinds of plants and animals that live there. I would also make sure that we did whatever we could to keep the oceans clean. I want to do something with animals when I get older and I have thought about being a marine biologist. That would be really neat because then I could prove that pollution is hurting the plants and animals that live in the ocean. I could do all sorts of experiments and get on the news and tell everyone my results.
